The city condemned most of the Bangor Mall, but the craft fair will go on

If you were headed into the Bangor Mall, know that you can't go in through its interior corridors, though Dick's Sporting Goods and JCPenney are open through their exterior entrances. Code enforcement condemned most of the building Monday, posting placards that call it "unfit for human habitation or use." Signs on the doors, dated 11/02, cite Chapter 223 of the city's laws and ordinances. City spokesperson David Warren cited unsafe electrical conditions, inoperable heating systems and a lack of working general-use restrooms.
Namdar Realty Group, the New York-based owner, was notified the day of the closure. The city says the affected areas stay closed until Namdar resolves the violations. Tenants say they got no notice. Logan Bard of Some Theater Company said the nonprofit, a tenant since 2020, had zero warning before its major December production of Les Misérables.
- Appeal: Namdar has 30 days to petition the Board of Appeals
- Fine for entering or removing a sign: $100 to $2,500
- Power: shut off to both corridor entrances over a roof leak
- Craft fair: this weekend and next, in the former furniture space
