  • The Outdoor Sport Institute in Millinocket has received $1.25M in state & federal grants to create over 18 miles of trails in Island Falls, Patten, and Millinocket. Some work will begin in spring & continue after environmental permits are secured.  The Piscataquis Observer

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Drivers statewide saw gas prices drop by 2 cents to $2.94 per gallon last week, making prices 9 cents lower than a month ago. GasBuddy’s survey shows these lower rates signal a trend toward the lowest seasonal prices in five years + an encouraging sign for holiday travel.  FOX Bangor
  • Gas prices dropped in Maine over the past year, with AAA reporting an average of $2.95 per gallon compared to $3.04 before, showing a near dime reduction & diesel prices rose from $3.77 to $3.98 before falling last week.  WABI 5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • CSX cleared the homeless encampment near Penobscot Plaza on Monday after a Dec. 19 city council order led remaining residents to pack up, removing tents+trash and leaving few shelter options. Some residents moved to warming centers while others await housing help.  Bangor Daily News
  • A ribbon cutting at Bangor International Airport celebrated the renovated runway built with federal & local funds to support LifeFlight’s round-the-clock operations. The project, expected to serve about one million commercial passengers by 2030, marks a key upgrade in the airport's facilities.  WABI 5
  • Maine AG Aaron Frey spent $10M of his $17.2M opioid settlement share, half to Health and Human Services for treatment and prevention. He will share more spending data with the MOSS Center (expected Feb.-Mar.) for public review.  Bangor Daily News

HEALTH NEWS

  • UNE will use a 1.6 million federal grant to expand training in medication-assisted treatment for opioid use disorder among medical students and current health providers in rural areas, with the program launching in August 2026. The initiative partners with over two dozen rural hospitals and clinics — a move aimed at reducing stigma and improving local care.  News Center Maine
