COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Private First Class Willard Carleton Orr of Bangor, killed on Dec. 7 at Hickam Field, was identified on Nov. 20 after 84 years by the Defense POW MIA Accounting Agency — his family will soon get a briefing. He is only Pearl Harbor casualty memorialized on a downtown pedestrian bridge.  WABI 5
  • Northern Maine Community Trails purchased the Nordic Heritage Outdoor Center in Presque Isle for $1 million and launched a capital campaign to cover costs while planning to reopen some trails for the 2025-2026 season.  FOX Bangor
  • UMaine hockey players joined Holden police Monday morning to hand out 25 boxes of food & $25 Hannaford gift cards at an apartment building during Holden’s annual 25 Days of Kindness. The event honored Chief Chris Greeley’s legacy and provided extra holiday support.  Bangor Daily News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Tri-County Technical Center in Dexter is one of 21 Maine schools receiving a $600 grant from Teens to Trails to boost outdoor clubs. The grant, supported by L.L.Bean — a longtime sponsor — will fund hikes, paddles, and other outdoor trips that help students learn about nature.  The Piscataquis Observer

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A strong solar storm produced northern lights on Monday night across northern states including Maine, and NOAA predicts a diminished display for Tuesday night as charged particles continue to interact with Earth’s atmosphere.  News Center Maine

HEALTH NEWS

  • Sarah's House in Holden is raising $1.6 million to install an elevator and four ADA-compliant rooms for cancer patients. The project, bolstered by a $100,000 donation from Maine Savings, will break ground in spring 2026 and be completed by next fall – easing travel for treatment.  FOX Bangor

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Local expert Matt Cronin from Harbor Shore Landscaping says that homeowners with older, flatter roofs should remove wet, heavy snow when it piles over 8 inches to prevent shingle damage and ice dams. Homeowners with steep, new or metal roofs generally do not need to clear snow.  The Piscataquis Observer

  • Brewer High School goalie Abbie Derosier earned the Miss Maine Field Hockey award as the top senior player on Sunday at the state banquet. She credited her 'goldfish' mindset for focusing on each play and praised her teammates and coaches for their support.  Bangor Daily News
