  • Friday, the Chamber of Commerce wrapped up its pasta drive by collecting 2,600 pounds of pasta, 900 jars and cans of sauce for local food pantries — donations that supported working poor residents and boosted community support.  WABI 5
  • Two companies donated $5,000 to Penquis’ Toyland Room Friday, doubling holiday gift assistance for Bangor families in need. The donation allowed kids to try out new toys before choosing one while UScellular collected pet items for the Bangor Humane Society.  WABI 5
  • Bangor High School JROTC held its annual Pearl Harbor remembrance ceremony on Friday on a local pedestrian bridge — they honored local victim William C. Orr with a 21-gun salute and wreath laying to remember those lost in the attack.  WABI 5
  • After a head-on collision last Sunday in New Canada, Toys for Tots organizer Rudolph St. Peter returned to work Monday in Cross Lake to ensure that toys reach children in need — his efforts cover the county from Benedicta to Allagash.  Bangor Daily News

  • Orono’s Stillwater River Trail transforms into a holiday wonderland starting Dec. 5 and runs every evening from 4 to 9 p.m. until Dec. 31; visitors can enjoy tunnels, overhead lights, and wrapped trees while donating to help cover utility costs.  WABI 5

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Forecasters from the National Weather Service say Maine’s drought may last through the winter as frozen ground limits water entering the soil (most areas remain in moderate to severe conditions); rain through mid-December might help, but drought could continue into spring if groundwater remains low.  The Piscataquis Observer
  • Local workers and residents dealt with the first cold snap when temperatures dropped sharply Friday; public works officials urge everyone to dress in layers + check on neighbors as winter deepens.  FOX Bangor

HEALTH NEWS

  • A cold snap hit last night as temperatures dropped below zero, and warming centers like the Brick Church in Bangor are ready to shelter up to 70 people nightly while safety officials urge residents to check heating systems + use generators safely.  News Center Maine
  • The Christine B. Foundation launched a fundraising campaign seeking to raise $100,000 by the end of 2025 to expand healthy food services for over 1,700 cancer patients and families.   • Bangor High's girls basketball team is led by new coach Kristin Hermanson (a former UMaine captain) and four seniors known for their speed as they open the season away against Brunswick at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.  Bangor Daily News
  • The 10th annual Millinocket Marathon and Half starts tomorrow at 10 a.m. for the full event and 10:10 a.m. for the half — 3,200 runners will brave cold weather while local supporters warm them and live music awaits at the Blue Ox Saloon.  WABI 5
