COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Tuesday morning, Orono IGA and Holy Family Catholic Church delivered complete Thanksgiving meal baskets to 80 Old Town families. The baskets included a 10 to 12 pound turkey, Maine potatoes, cranberry sauce, and other fixings—prepared on Sunday and handed out by local volunteers with extra donations easing a wait list.  WABI 5
  • Paula Brewer, a longtime Presque Isle reporter, has been named to lead The County desk for Aroostook County—bringing nearly 20 years of experience. Veteran Bill Trotter will head the paper’s coastal coverage with 28 years on Maine’s coast.  Bangor Daily News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Maine’s public universities invested over 638 million dollars in the state's economy last fiscal year — issuing paychecks to more than 10,000 workers and paying over 108 million dollars to local suppliers. Chancellor Daniel Malloy said the funds strengthened the workforce and boosted small business activity statewide — with 34.1 million dollars spent in Penobscot County.  FOX Bangor

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Two Eastern Maine Community College students, Nathaniel Kirkendall and Gavin McDonough, will travel to Michigan on Dec. 2 to compete in the national Mopar CAP Bracket Challenge to win a Dodge Demon performance car—advancing from a field of 100 technical programs and facing a team from Nebraska’s Metropolitan Community College. This opportunity marks a major milestone for the school’s automotive technology program.  News Center Maine

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Former Bangor City Council chair John Cashwell III died Sunday night at his home at age 78, his family said. He led the council from 2003 to 2006, helped set up projects like the Hollywood Casino and the Cross Insurance Center, and was known for his problem solving and care for Bangor (he served 20 years in the military).  Bangor Daily News
  • Correctional officers graduated on Nov 25 at a local ceremony in Bangor—officials said the rigorous training program has prepared them for the challenges ahead.  FOX Bangor

HEALTH NEWS

  • Today, the Holden Police Department—via its 25 days of Kindness program's $2,000 donation—and Eastern Maine Emergency Vet hosted a free rabies clinic in Holden to help pet owners get needed vaccinations at no cost as many struggle financially. A long line formed before the clinic opened as more people sought the service.  FOX Bangor

  • Spirit, a lively 3-month-old female Siberian Husky, is at the Bangor Humane Society puppy room looking for an active home where she can get daily exercise—she is known for her vocal nature and love of adventure.  WABI 5

SPORTS NEWS

  • Kodi Legassie, a former John Bapst hockey player—now returning as head coach—takes over the Crusaders after Devin Fitzpatrick stepped down for personal reasons. He held his first practice last Wednesday and will lead the team in the John Bapst Faceoff Tournament on Friday and Saturday at Sawyer Arena.  Bangor Daily News
  • UMaine linebacker Christian Thomas earned first team all-conference honors on Tuesday for his 120 tackles—the 11th most in program history. Five other Black Bears were named to the second or third teams while four received honorable mentions.  Bangor Daily News
  • UMaine hockey beat Boston College by a score of 3 to 0 last Saturday, which improved the team's record to 8 to 5 to 1 and earned freshman goalie Mathis Rousseau Hockey East Goaltender of the Week honors—this win marked the first shutout against Boston College since 2004.  Bangor Daily News
