COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Bangor Police Department hosted the annual pet food drive for the Furry Friends Food Bank outside Shaw’s on Main Street to collect pet food, products, and cash donations for senior citizens. The program—operated by the Eastern Area Agency on Aging—helped fixed-income pet owners manage rising care costs.  WABI 5
  • Bangor police partnered with the Eastern Area Agency on Aging to hold their annual furry friends’ food drive this Saturday near Shaws to help older residents feed their pets—donations including dog food, cat litter, cash, and online payments will be accepted throughout the year.   • The Maine Veterans Project hosted a Thanksgiving distribution event at the Elks Lodge in Bangor on Saturday—veterans could choose from 200 turkeys, 200 gallons of milk, 200 pounds of bacon and other food while partner groups helped them access benefits; the project doubled its food offerings from last year.  WABI 5
  • Residents in Capehart are collecting donations of essential items like detergent and diapers to help families struggling with rising costs after delayed benefits during the government shutdown.   • Wilcox Wellness + Fitness hosted its 11th annual Burpees for Turkeys event in Bangor and Brunswick on Saturday, where every $5 donation spurred one burpee and raised over $21,500 to support United Way's hunger relief.   • Hampden Recreation held its annual Holiday Market on Saturday where about 40 local vendors sold festive crafts and played Christmas music for shoppers who supported small businesses — vendors said the market can be a key source of income for some.  FOX Bangor

  • 87-year-old Noel Paul Stookey is finishing his book 'There is Love' on his spiritual journey that brought him to Maine, with co-author Jeanne Torrence Finley near the end of their nine-year project.   • A new 14-minute documentary was released on YouTube Saturday by Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife to show 50 years of black bear research in Maine—featuring interviews with biologists and field footage from rugged terrain.   • UNH Wildcats beat UMaine 33-27 on Saturday at Wildcat Stadium in Durham—building a 27-7 lead and fighting off a late rally to claim the Brice-Cowell Musket for the fourth straight season.
