COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Heart of Maine United Way held a ribbon cutting on Wednesday afternoon at its new nonprofit hub, The Community, on Mount Hope Ave in Bangor. The space serves as the agency’s headquarters and a shared venue for nonprofits—offering a cost-effective place for collaboration and training.  WABI 5
  • News Center Maine will host its Honor Flight Maine Telethon on Monday, Nov 10 to raise funds for veterans to visit Washington, D.C. war memorials — donations will cover costs averaging $1,090 per veteran and include a Flightless Program for those who cannot travel.  News Center Maine
  • Good Shepherd Food Bank is facing record demand as halted SNAP benefits have left about 170,000 Mainers without their usual help and federal food funding has dropped—forcing its network of over 600 pantries to work harder to meet growing need.  News Center Maine
  • Berkley and Charlie are now available for adoption at the Paws Adoption Center; local families in Bangor can visit the center to learn more about adding these furry friends to their home.  WABI 5
  • Area Veterans Day events will honor local service members from November 7 to November 11 in towns such as Milo, Foxcroft, Greenville, Guilford and Sangerville. The schedule features a SAD 41 program at Penquis Valley School tomorrow at 9 a.m.—Foxcroft Academy’s assembly at 10:30 a.m., Greenville and Guilford ceremonies on Monday, and veteran dinners, a POW/MIA program, and a free luncheon on Tuesday, with Friends of Community Fitness offering veterans a 20 percent discount all month.  The Piscataquis Observer

EDUCATION NEWS

  • This fall, Valley Grange teams visited Ridge View Elementary in Dexter to gift dictionaries to third graders—marking a 20-year project that has given over 4,000 dictionaries—and to boost reading and writing skills.  WABI 5

HEALTH NEWS

  • Northern Light Health and Anthem inked a new contract that keeps care in-network for more than 30,000 Mainers — covering all services provided since November 1 so patients do not face out-of-network charges. This deal ends months of uncertainty for patients and state workers as both parties worked through a difficult negotiation.  Bangor Daily News
  • The American Lung Association released a report showing Maine ranked 5th nationally in lung cancer screening, with about 24 percent of eligible Mainers receiving an annual low-dose CT scan. The study revealed a lung cancer rate of 66 per 100,000 people and urged state lawmakers to require insurance coverage for biomarker testing + boost early detection.  WABI 5

SPORTS NEWS

  • Cooper Flagg, a Maine native who left home at 15 to attend Montverde Academy, became a standout at Duke—earning him the No. 1 pick for the Dallas Mavericks. He credits lessons from his competitive parents for his success and has already earned praise from teammates like Anthony Davis for his readiness to impact the game.  News Center Maine
  • Matthew Allen, the Orono Red Riots goalie, both scored a penalty and made a crucial save in Tuesday's win over Mount View—his performance kept his team in the game and will set them up for a state title match against Hall-Dale on Saturday.  Bangor Daily News
  • UMaine’s men’s hockey team will play a rare Thursday—Friday series at UMass starting today, reversing its usual Friday-Saturday schedule.
