- ➤ Penquis partners with WABI and local food pantries to provide 5,500 households with turkeys to ease Thanksgiving costs. The drive starts Tuesday November 18th with Free the Z at the Brewer Hannaford parking lot and features a Turkey Telethon on Thursday November 20th from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.—supporting local families in need. - ➤ Maine musician King Kyote is set to release his self-titled album later this month after years of work and will perform live at Aura in Portland on November 22. News Center Maine
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ A group of Maine education organizations released a joint statement warning that a disruption in federal food programs will worsen food insecurity for students and their families. They urged the state to act and protect in-school meal programs as well as promote community resources such as food pantries and backpack programs — steps needed to support student well-being. - ➤ On Sunday, dozens of runners conquered Great Pond Mountain in Orland during the Wildlands Summit Run to support a conservation effort that aims to preserve 5,000 acres — funds raised help further land acquisitions and public access on scenic trails. News Center Maine
- ➤ The Maine DEP has issued another notice of violation to Mallinckrodt for its defunct Orrington chemical plant where hazardous soil remains contaminated with mercury and chloropicrin after decades of cleanup—state officials say the company must submit a detailed remediation plan within 30 days to protect the Penobscot River. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Mainers face a gap in SNAP benefits as the government shutdown forces the use of an emergency fund of $4.65 billion—which covers only half the usual aid—for nearly 170,000 residents. Gov Mills urged officials to use more funds while communities step in with meal deals and food pantries, a measure that may prove critical if the shutdown continues into December. Bangor Daily News
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Anthem said that Northern Light Health's pledge to treat its customers as in-network—without a signed contract—is a recipe for patient confusion and may lead to incorrect charges. Anthem said its network now includes only NLH hospitals and Medicare Advantage until December and that it is ready to sign a contract extension as soon as possible. The Piscataquis Observer
- ➤ Anthem said Northern Light Health’s pledge to treat its patients as in network risks patient confusion because without a contract extension, claims for non-hospital services will be processed as out of network. Northern Light continues using in-network status for hospitals and Medicare Advantage until Dec. 31—keeping the dispute over a new deal active. Bangor Daily News

- ➤ The UMaine hockey team swept Boston University with close wins over the weekend, including a 5—4 overtime victory on Friday and an 8—5 win on Saturday that moved them from 12th to sixth in the U.S. College Hockey Online poll. Head coach Ben Barr said his team worked hard to overcome one-goal deficits in each game. Bangor Daily News
- ➤ UMaine men’s basketball is starting the season with high fan enthusiasm as season tickets are sold out and the home opener on Nov. 16 is completely booked. The team will face its first challenge Monday night in Washington, D.C. against George Washington after an 89 to 47 scrimmage win over Husson University. Bangor Daily News
- ➤ Maine high school soccer enters its final week as North regional championships unfold in Bangor today and continue tomorrow at Cameron Stadium and other local venues—teams compete in various Class A, B, C and D matchups ahead of Saturday’s state tournaments. Bangor Daily News
- ➤ After a 4-3 win at UMass Lowell in the America East quarterfinal, the UMaine field hockey team will travel to Vermont today at 1 p.m. to play the No. 1 seed Catamounts — the Black Bears carry a 13-25 record in tournament play. Bangor Daily News
