- ➤ The Maine Community Foundation announced a $250,000 grant to the Good Shepherd Food Bank to support the Mainers Feeding Mainers program that will use local produce from 90 farms to provide meals for 15,000 families of four as SNAP funds lapse today — affecting 170,000 Mainers in need. - ➤ A new report stated that lobster numbers off Maine and Massachusetts have fallen 34% since 2018, and regulators declared overfishing is occurring—officials may impose new catch limits to help restore the population. WABI 5
- ➤ A new report shows that lobsters are now overfished off New England—Maine stocks have dropped 34% since 2018—and the commission may impose future restrictions on fishermen to protect the valuable catch. FOX Bangor
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Maine Public Utilities Commission said that Maine’s 207 area code will not be split for at least 25 more years—number conservation steps and telecom company work have made it last until 2050. The commission has returned unused numbers and merged rate centers to keep the area code and protect Maine’s identity. Bangor Daily News
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Northern Light Health and Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield have until today to finalize a contract deal after extending negotiations—if no agreement is reached, over 30,000 patients will soon face out-of-network care.
