- ➤ Early Thursday, Smith Builders Roofing Specialists replaced the roof for Army and Air Force veteran Roger Gray in Hudson using their Roofs for Heroes program—helping him avoid costly repairs before winter. Gray said the work, which cost between $8,000 and $12,000, eased his worries about leaks as cold weather came. FOX Bangor

- ➤ Dexter Regional High School finished third in T-Mobile’s Friday Night 5G Lights contest and added $50K — bringing its total award to $75K to help fund lights for home football games. T-Mobile will return on Nov 14 to celebrate the achievement. Bangor Daily News

- ➤ Operators at Juniper Ridge Landfill in Old Town announced they will treat the landfill leachate for PFAS using foam fractionation and plan to file permits next year, aiming to have the system working by 2027. Advocates say this treatment does not justify the facility’s expansion — concerns remain for the Penobscot River and nearby communities. Maine Public
- ➤ On Oct. 27, fisheries resource biologist Jeff Bagley and his team tagged lake trout on Moosehead Lake and recorded each fish’s length, weight and sex using trapnets to study how the species impacts the lake's ecosystem—data from one site yielded 4 fish while another yielded 21. They plan to continue netting for 10 more days to recapture tagged fish and estimate the mature population. The Piscataquis Observer

- ➤ Maine Housing said its emergency heating assistance program will be delayed because $38 million in funds for the Energy Crisis Intervention Program remains frozen due to a government shutdown – leaving tens of thousands of Mainers, including seniors and families with young children, without up to $500 in aid – as winter approaches. - ➤ Gov. Janet Mills has directed $1.25M to Maine food pantries and hunger relief programs as federal SNAP benefits will stop tomorrow, Nov. 1—impacting 170,000 residents. The funds, with $1M from the governor’s contingency account and $250K from the John T. Gorman Foundation, will help families, children, seniors, veterans, and people with disabilities. - ➤ Northern Light Health must reach an agreement with Anthem by the end of today to avoid leaving more than 30,000 patients out-of-network starting Saturday, Nov. 1 — months of stalled negotiations have raised concerns that many may need new care providers during the open enrollment period — if no deal is struck. - ➤ Bangor Area Recovery Network provides free haircuts every last Thursday with Cuts 4 Christ volunteers to help boost confidence among those in recovery—serving over a dozen community members with a haircut and hygiene supplies each month. - ➤ Maine is funding blood tests for more than 600 families exposed to forever chemicals as doctors study whether a long-used cholesterol drug can hasten PFAS elimination. - ➤ The Department of Health and Human Services said open enrollment on CoverME.gov will start November 1 to help Mainers pick plans that lower costs—households may qualify for tax credits that could end if Congress does not act.
