COMMUNITY NEWS

  • UMaine alum Themis Violaris led Grizzly Entertainment to bring Maine's largest drone light show to homecoming festivities, staging a free display with 400 drones. The event begins today at 5:50 p.m. at University Mall and will run again tomorrow at Alfond Stadium—guests are encouraged to arrive early.  WABI 5
  • Freckle Farm in St. David won the statewide Maine Institute for Family-Owned Business Shep Lee Community Service Award — a recognition of its work fighting food insecurity since 2020 — as the Morin family continues to serve locals through programs like WIC, SNAP and the Madawaska Farmers Market.  The County
  • Belfast Soup Kitchen will buy Goose River Farm Market and its land in January to give the Kindness Community Market more room, after it served 100 households in one day. Executive director Cherie Merrill said a new donation covered the purchase—ensuring future funds go directly to operations amid rising need.  WABI 5

  • The Bangor Daily News was named the state’s best daily newspaper for the second year in a row at the Maine Press Association conference in South Portland — longtime cartoonist George Danby was inducted into the hall of fame and deputy state editor Paula Brewer received the Unsung Hero Award.  The Piscataquis Observer

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Maine is in a severe drought that now covers 93% of the state—up from 73% last week—with many wells running dry and water levels low in key counties. Forecasts predict rain Friday night will not ease the drought and overnight temperatures in the 30s signal the season’s first frost is near.  Bangor Daily News
  • The Maine Public Utilities Commission is asking for comments on a draft RFP for a northern Maine wind and transmission line project that aims to cut natural gas use and lower electric costs. Commission staff will review responses after comments close on Oct. 29 and may issue a formal RFP by the end of the year — a move that could bring regional support and reduce costs for ratepayers.  Bangor Daily News

  • The Coast Guard has put its Coastal Buoy Modernization Proposal on hold after receiving over 3,200 public comments and will further review the aids to navigation system—this proposal had planned to remove 350 buoys, including about 150 along Maine’s coast, which has raised safety concerns among local mariners.  WABI 5

HEALTH NEWS

  • Bangor Public Health launched a new HIV case management program today to support those affected by what officials call Maine’s largest HIV outbreak, which has seen 29 confirmed cases linked to injection drug use and housing instability since October 2023 — the program is funded by the city’s opioid settlement funds. Local non-profits have also stepped up HIV testing and prevention efforts in the area.  FOX Bangor

  • Cooper Flagg's exclusive New Balance basketball shoes sold out online nearly immediately except in the largest sizes—driving resale prices well above $500 on platforms like StockX, while the sneakers, designed to honor his Maine roots, were released on Wednesday to align with his NBA debut with the Dallas Mavericks against the Spurs.  Bangor Daily News
