BUSINESS NEWS

  • Delta Air Lines will expand its seasonal service at Bangor International Airport next summer by adding Sunday flights to Atlanta from June 13 through Sept. 6 and resuming Saturday Detroit flights from June 13 through Sept. 5. The schedule extension—six weeks longer than planned—and increased aircraft size come after strong passenger demand.  News Center Maine

  • Brodie Hinckley resigned as director of the Bureau of Emergency Communications earlier this month after he was charged with animal cruelty following the death of Baxter— a chocolate Labrador comfort dog who died when left in a hot car on May 28 outside the Bangor Regional Communications Center.  Bangor Daily News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Stephen King’s movie adaptation of 'The Long Walk' is now available on digital video on demand after its theater release on September 12. The film tells the story of a dystopian contest where 100 children walk until one wins a cash prize — it stars Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson and Mark Hamill.  FOX Bangor
  • Penobscot Theatre Company has brought the 19th century ghost story 'The Turn of the Screw' to life at the Bangor Opera House, where Katie Peabody stars as a governess who begins to see eerie apparitions. Directed by Cheryl Willis with Ben Layman in several roles, the production will run through Nov. 2 (featuring minimalist set design and clever lighting that build the suspense).  Bangor Daily News
  • UMaine Cooperative Extension and the Innovative Media Research and Commercialization Center will host a screening of the documentary Seeds of Change: Breaking Free from the Prison Food System on Monday, October 27 at 6:30 p.m. at the IMRC building on 5 Hilltop Road in Orono—free and open to the public, with a panel discussion featuring Maine organic farmer Mark McBrine and film producer Maximillian Armstrong to follow.  FOX Bangor

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Scientists said that the North Atlantic right whale group off the Maine coast grew to 384 animals—up eight from last year—as new rules helped lower injuries and deaths. They added that new calves and fewer harmful injuries offer hope for the rare whales despite ongoing dangers.  Bangor Daily News
  • Scientists report that the rare North Atlantic right whale population reached 384 animals, up 8 from last year thanks to new conservation measures + improved management in Canada. Researchers are cautiously optimistic that the slow growth will continue to help the species recover from a steep past decline.  WGAN
  • Rivers in eastern and northern Maine have dropped to record lows as drought intensifies, with 439 wells now dry and nearly 75 percent of the state in severe or extreme drought — local well drillers report a 30 to 40 percent increase in service calls as residents seek deeper wells.  The Piscataquis Observer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mainers will not be receiving November Snap benefits due to a federal government shutdown, according to the Department of Health and Human Services — over 169,000 people rely on the program and benefits already loaded on EBT cards remain available until new guidance is provided.  FOX Bangor

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Mabel Wadsworth Center in Bangor is still providing long-term birth control while MaineCare has not reimbursed tens of thousands of dollars, leaving the nonprofit at risk of ending services for MaineCare patients by year-end if the promised rate update is not implemented. Clinic leadership said repeated follow-ups since March failed to resolve the funding gap—raising concerns about continued patient care access.  Bangor Daily News

  • UMaine’s men’s and women’s basketball teams were each picked to finish second in the America East preseason coaches poll with Vermont leading the rankings — the men received one first-place vote while the women got two.
