COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Two Bangor organizations are teaming up in the 10th Fill the Forester effort to collect pet supplies at a shelter on Mt. Hope Ave—and at a local dealership on Hogan Road—from Oct. 20th to Oct. 25th to support pet adoptions. They will use an ASPCA grant for 50% off adoption fees and host a Friday celebration with free engraved pet ID tags.  WABI 5

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A new report released today by the Maine Forest Products Council and the Maine Department of Economic and community development shows the forest industry supported 29 thousand jobs statewide and contributed 8.3 percent to Maine's economy in 2024. Krysta West said significant investments diversified the industry—improving its resilience and efficiency despite past challenges.  FOX Bangor
  • Gas prices dropped almost 4 cents per gallon in the last week, lowering the state average to $2.99 a gallon. GasBuddy's head of Petroleum Analysis said this is the first time since 2020 that prices have fallen below $3—OPEC is credited for raising oil production.  FOX Bangor

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Maine is in severe drought as record low river flows and 439 dry wells show the strain on water supplies, with nearly 75 percent of the state experiencing severe or extreme conditions. Local well drillers report a surge in service calls—rain predicted this week is not enough to ease the drought.  Bangor Daily News
  • Brookfield Renewable said it is selling four dams on the Kennebec River after state regulators demanded costly fish passages that exceed federal guidelines (pushing costs far above its $100 million plan). The company withdrew its water quality certificate application and will ask the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for an abeyance while The Nature Conservancy prepares to decommission the dams.  Bangor Daily News

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Bangor has approved plans for a new permanent supportive housing facility near the airport that will offer 30 studio apartments and round-the-clock support for chronically homeless residents. The Bangor Housing Development Corporation, working with Preble Street, will start engineering and design work this fall—construction is expected to begin in late spring and the building will open in spring.  Bangor Daily News
  • A simple 720-square-foot cabin on a private island on Millinocket Lake is for sale for $289K and offers two bedrooms, one bath, and sweeping views of Katahdin. The cabin has basic features with a woodstove for heat and hand pump water, and it is a short drive from local spots like Knife Edge Brewing + River Driver’s Restaurant.  The Piscataquis Observer

SPORTS NEWS

  • UMaine's women’s ice hockey team earned a 2-1 win against No. 8 Colgate on Saturday in Orono, marking their first victory over the team since 2004. Juniors Raegan Wurm and Lily Fetch scored the late goals—while sophomore goalie Kiia Lahtinen made 40 saves—to secure a confidence-boosting win against a top-10 opponent.  Bangor Daily News
  • UMaine running back Nick Laughlin from Cape Elizabeth is out for the season after he sustained a knee injury on a one-yard touchdown run two Saturdays ago at Merrimack College — coach Jordan Stevens said Laughlin will soon have knee surgery.  Bangor Daily News
