COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Over the weekend, the Penobscot County community rallied behind James Forrest—known for his generosity—after he was diagnosed with stage four brain cancer and underwent three brain surgeries in two weeks. The Bangor Alternative Baseball League held a fundraising event with a touch-a-truck display and silent auction to help pay his hospital bills.  FOX Bangor
  • The nonprofit UCP of Maine kicked off Halloween early with its 23rd annual Pumpkin Patch fundraiser at the Anah Shriners Center—drawing over 1,000 people and vendors handing out candy. All money raised will support services that help people with disabilities live more independently.  FOX Bangor

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association held its annual Great Maine Apple Day in Unity (featuring apple cider pressing and baking) to teach locals about over 300 apple varieties (including Smokehouse and McIntosh). The event celebrated Maine's long apple tradition and aims to keep these fruits in production.  News Center Maine

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At halftime during their Saturday game against Houlton, Dexter Regional High School received a $25,000 check as a finalist in the T-Mobile Friday Night Lights giveaway — a national contest to support small towns’ school athletic facilities. The school is now third in the running for a $1 million grand prize and had nearly 410,000 votes by Sunday night.  WGAN

SPORTS NEWS

  • At the Mount Desert Island Marathon this past weekend, 74-year-old Gloria Vasquez ran her 96th marathon in her goal to complete 100 marathons before she turns 100—she enjoyed the bright fall colors at Acadia and joined many runners in Downeast Maine.  FOX Bangor
  • UMaine is not planning to revive its men’s soccer program + dropped in 2009 for budget cuts as it focuses on giving the women’s team their own field. AD Jude Killy said the school will keep current programs funded + meet Title IX requirements as local and national soccer interest grows.  Bangor Daily News
