COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Community leaders and state officials including Sen. Susan Collins gathered on Friday for the groundbreaking of the new Cathy Gero Bangor Region YMCA on Main Street near Davis Court and Talbot Park — an 82,000 square-foot facility costing $57.8 million that will open in spring with two pools, a gym, an indoor track, a fitness center and infant care starting at six months. The project has raised $43.5 million from private donors including Jim Gero, honoring his late wife Cathy.  News Center Maine
  • On Saturday, thousands gathered at Broadway Park for No Kings protests held in several cities across the state. Organizers from Indivisible Bangor said they protested changes that cut healthcare and gave tax breaks to billionaires — a stand to protect everyone's rights.  FOX Bangor
  • The Bangor Daily News was named Maine’s best daily newspaper at the Maine Press Association’s conference on Saturday in Portland—Paula Brewer from the Presque Isle office received the Unsung Hero Award, and longtime cartoonist George Danby was inducted into the association’s hall of fame.   • On Saturday night, WABI was named Station of the Year at the Maine Association of Broadcasters Annual News and Creative Awards in Bangor. The event recognized top achievements in Maine television and radio — highlighting the station's strong campaigns while also congratulating WAGM for its wins.  WABI 5

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Dexter Regional High School received a $25,000 prize check at halftime during a T-Mobile sponsored football game against Houlton on Saturday as part of the Friday Night 5G Light contest. The school plans to use the funds to upgrade its field lighting and will compete for a $1,000,000 grand prize as voting ends on October 24th.  WABI 5
  • Husson University students celebrated Homecoming on Saturday with a carnival that included a tailgate party, a decoration contest funded by the Alumni Association, and activities during Family and Friends Weekend—where football and men's soccer teams played against state rivals.  WABI 5

HEALTH NEWS

  • A local hiker on a three-mile trail in Maine found a hickory tussock moth caterpillar had invaded her boot, which led to a swollen, blistering rash that required a week of treatment with anti-itch cream and antihistamines. The incident warns hikers to inspect their boots before setting out—small creatures here can cause big discomfort.  Bangor Daily News
