BUSINESS NEWS

  • Bangor couple Andrew and Julianne Sawyer returned from life abroad and started serving Hawaiian shave ice from a food truck in 2022 before opening their shop on Park Street. They plan to add 100% Hawaiian grown coffee, baked goods and energy drinks this fall — their careful study of Hawaiian history helps keep the taste authentic.  WABI 5

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Center Theatre will host a free concert by Darlin’ Corey on Saturday, Oct. 25 at 3 p.m. as part of the Bangor Savings Bank Free Community Concert Series—attendees should reserve tickets in advance due to limited seating.  The Piscataquis Observer

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Farmers in Aroostook County finished their potato harvest season after a dry summer and said the crop went smoother than expected with large potatoes for local meals and small ones shipped to Florida. They serviced equipment and sorted the harvest as they prepared for next planting season—keeping busy work until May.  WABI 5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Brick Church on Union Street is applying for $60,000 in city funding to help keep its warming center operating this winter and will submit its application by October 22nd. The church, which served more than 60 people a day over six seasons, is planning to reopen as early as November 15th to support those affected by recent center closures due to lost state funds.  WABI 5
  • Drivers on Hogan Road saw a new scene Tuesday when the decrepit Bangor Mall sign was demolished—following a court ruling that held Namdar Realty Group responsible for violations including sewage spills, a leaky roof and sinkholes.  WABI 5

HEALTH NEWS

  • Maine has started a state-funded program to pay for PFAS blood tests for residents exposed to toxic chemicals in contaminated areas. The new program, which followed a 2022 bill and has already sent notices to eligible residents in Fairfield, Unity, and Freeport—aims to help people avoid the high cost of testing.  News Center Maine
  • Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center held its 16th Annual Champion the Cure Challenge and raised more than $750,000 for local cancer care. Almost 1,800 participants joined by walking, running, cycling, paddling or riding a horse — funds that will support advanced cancer treatment and patient programs.  WABI 5

  • Vivi Nemeth of John Bapst High School tied for first in the Class B girls state championship last Friday by shooting a 23-over round of 95 at Natanis Golf Course — she had only started playing golf a few months ago.  Bangor Daily News
