CULTURE NEWS

  • At an Indigenous Peoples’ Day event held on Monday at Veazie Salmon Club, Penobscot Indian Nation Chief Kirk Francis led a prayer and explained how the Penobscot River is treated as a relative by his tribe—while the Maine Indian Tribal-State Commission released its 133-page report Sea Run on audiobook and is using a $25,000 grant to support recommendations that boost Wabanaki access to sea-run fisheries.  Bangor Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Bangor will use a one-time General Assistance funding boost to support new overnight warming centers this winter after two existing centers will not open; nonprofits have until 5 p.m. on Oct. 22 to apply for help that may shelter about 60 people. City Council is set to approve $60,000 at its Wednesday meeting, and the centers will offer meals and help connect people with other needed services.  Bangor Daily News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Since 1951, the Morrison Center has served Mainers with disabilities—providing therapies, case management, and educational support—and despite cuts to MaineCare and Medicaid funding, CEO Danielle Loring said the center will hold fundraisers this month to keep offering essential services.  News Center Maine
  • Hermon High School’s Key Club held a fundraising walk at Bangor City Forest and Orono Bog Walk as part of National Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day—hosting a bake sale to raise additional funds. The National Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation matched donations to benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.  FOX Bangor

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Namdar Realty Group demolished the broken Bangor Mall sign at Hogan Road and Bangor Mall Boulevard on Monday—this visible step comes as the company works to fix city code violations and repair potholes, a stormwater line, and the mall roof. Only the sign posts remain as a judge is set to issue final decisions after Oct. 24.  Bangor Daily News

SPORTS NEWS

  • UMaine head coach Jordan Stevens said running backs Sincere Baines and Nick Laughlin were injured during Saturday’s 20-13 win at Merrimack—Baines left after two carries with a tender ankle and Laughlin suffered a knee injury on a touchdown run. Stevens did not offer a timeline for their return and said he will update the team as he learns more.  Bangor Daily News
  • UMaine hockey beat Holy Cross in two games last weekend by scoring 11 goals, with most coming from quick net drives—showing the team's new balanced play after losing key scorers last season.   • The Hermon Hawks and John Bapst Crusaders have remained unbeaten at 6-0 this season—after wins over Brewer (36-0) and Belfast (54-22) they still have two regular season games left to boost their playoff chances. The teams are among seven state schools yet to suffer a loss.  Bangor Daily News
