COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Courageous Steps Project added a new program to help local communities on Oct 9— it will offer support and resources to residents as the initiative rolls out in the coming weeks.  WABI 5
  • Speedway 95’s Paul Bunyan SpeedWeekend will use all racers’ entry fees to help Maine Veterans’ Homes rec fund and will include a memorial race for Ikey Dorr. Longtime owner Del Merritt said his final weekend is now as he turns the keys over to Ricky Craven—upholding a 15-year tradition of care for our veterans.  FOX Bangor
  • Heart of Maine United Way is moving its main office from Main Street to 700 Mount Hope Ave, Suite 101 to launch The Community: Maine’s Nonprofit Hub where nonprofits can share meeting and training space—Volunteers cleaned the building Friday ahead of the planned Monday move and the project has a $1.7 million budget with over $1 million raised so far.  WABI 5
  • Seventy-four Maine veterans will fly from Bangor to Washington, DC with Honor Flight Maine for a once in a lifetime trip to see war memorials that honor their service — organizers say the trip offers healing — and a Welcome Home celebration for immediate family will take place on Sunday due to limited space from the shutdown.  WABI 5

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Bangor Historical Society is hosting walking ghost tours this October at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday that guide groups through a mile-long downtown route to explore haunted sites and share local history — each tour costs $12 and is limited to 25 participants until Oct. 30.  WABI 5

EDUCATION NEWS

  • WABI has launched the Surprise Squad nomination period to honor a school staff member who goes above and beyond — nominations close on Nov. 21 and the chosen nominee will receive a special surprise for their school.  WABI 5

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Visitors heading to Acadia National Park this weekend say the park is mostly open despite the government shutdown — rangers check reservations at some spots while many roads and trails remain accessible.  FOX Bangor

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry received 105 proposals from organizations in all 16 counties seeking $16.7 million to improve trails for outdoor recreation—officials will review the submissions and plan to announce awards in November while future rounds open in June.  The Piscataquis Observer
  • State police urge drivers to take extra care as daylight hours shrink during National Pedestrian Safety Month — officials report that 20 of 135 fatal crashes involved pedestrians and advise both drivers and walkers to use bright gear and avoid distractions.  News Center Maine
