  • Maine food banks are under pressure from the federal shutdown and funding cuts as families turn to pantries for help with fewer dollars available for programs like SNAP. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Maine’s fall colors are nearly at their peak for the holiday weekend as a state report shows color change between 70 and 100 percent and leaf drop of 50 to 70 percent—officials say this is an ideal time for outdoor events.  News Center Maine
  • Fall foliage is peaking in Maine today as central, coastal, and southern areas show vibrant colors while northern regions start fading. Rainfall on Wednesday did not drop many leaves—ensuring ideal leaf-peeping conditions for the holiday weekend.  Bangor Daily News
  • A U.S. Drought Monitor update shows that every county in Maine is facing drought—most areas are now in severe or extreme conditions and over 1.3 million Mainers are affected. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A Bangor board unanimously approved retroactive permission for Steven Farren’s new asphalt roof—meant to mimic slate shingles—on his Broadway home, ending an 11-month dispute over costly repairs. Farren, who said his insurance warned of cancellation and delays with slate contractors, believes the decision may lead to updates in city rules for historic properties.  Bangor Daily News
  • Maine is suing protester John Andrade for allegedly interfering with Planned Parenthood services by using amplifiers to create disruptive noise, and the Attorney General’s office seeks to bar him from coming within 150 feet of any facility—he remains active as a founding member of King’s Coalition for Abolition.  News Center Maine
  • Jonathan Bush, cousin of former President George W. Bush, launched his campaign for Maine governor in Belfast last night. He said he would boost Maine's economy by cutting taxes and easing regulations — and he criticized Gov. Janet Mills for her soft approach to violent crime and substance abuse.  Maine Public
  • Maine Fire Chiefs’ Association, the Forest Service and the Fire Marshal’s Office held a demonstration at the Cross Insurance Center on Thursday as part of Fire Prevention Month—teaching the public about life-saving sprinkler systems. A test fire in a secure trailer showed that a room with a sprinkler had limited damage while the room without one was completely charred in one minute—illustrating how sprinklers slow fire spread and buy vital escape time.  WABI 5

HEALTH NEWS

  • Hundreds of people will join the Eastern Maine Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Saturday at the Bangor Waterfront, starting with a 10 a.m. opening ceremony and a 10:30 a.m. walk. The event aims to raise $84,000 to help families in Maine affected by Alzheimer’s.  WABI 5
  • Northern Light Health has expanded access to breast cancer screenings with its mobile mammography unit, which began service on April 11, 2024 at CA Dean Hospital and has provided tests for over 650 patients in rural Maine. The state’s only mobile unit—delivering imaging that meets the same level as a doctor’s office—will visit eight communities through December to reduce barriers to early detection.  WABI 5

  • UMaine announced new road and parking lot closures for men’s hockey games this season — a free shuttle service by Cyr Bus Line will start two hours before game time from the Collins Center and Belgrade parking lots to the renovated Alfond Arena and return fans after the game.  Bangor Daily News
  • UMaine men's hockey coach Ben Barr said his team must improve after a 2 to 2 exhibition tie with UNH as the Black Bears, featuring 13 newcomers, face defending Holy Cross at the renovated Alfond Arena today at 7 p.m. They plan to work hard to cover early mistakes—relying on strong defense as they take on a fast, experienced opponent.  Bangor Daily News
