ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Maine is nearing peak foliage conditions ahead of the holiday weekend—Fall Foliage spokesperson Gale Ross said vibrant colors are appearing in central, coastal and southern areas. A Freeze Watch is in effect from Thursday evening through Friday morning to protect crops and outdoor infrastructure in affected counties.  FOX Bangor

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Maine lawmakers including Sen. Joe Baldacci met at the Bangor Public Library on Wednesday to demand that the Department of Health and Human Services reissue its contract for non-emergency transportation—after its provider Modivcare filed for bankruptcy. They said the failing service left disabled and elderly Mainers missing rides for essential appointments—concerns that will be discussed in Augusta during spring supplemental budget talks.  WABI 5
  • Emergency homeless shelters in Maine will get a one-time boost of $4.47 million from a new state law that took effect this month—introduced by state Sen. Rachel Talbot Ross—to help cover operating costs and keep shelters running. A study showed that operating one shelter bed costs about $100 per night, which highlights the need for this funding.  News Center Maine

HEALTH NEWS

  • Leaders, groups and candidates met at the Augusta Civic Center earlier this week to talk about rising health care costs that may cut benefits—many Mainers worry high premiums and fewer hospital services could hurt rural areas. They discussed ideas like a state-run insurance plan and more funds for rural hospitals to lower costs and keep care available.  News Center Maine
  • MaineGeneral Health expanded its Horizon Program to offer HIV/AIDS services in 14 counties—up from nine—with added coverage in Aroostook, Hancock, Penobscot, Piscataquis and Washington and with funding from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that helped ensure patients continued to receive care after Lubec ended its program.  News Center Maine

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Friends of Sears Island built a new hiking trail called Cliff Trail that follows the shoreline near underground brooks, ruins of a historic home, and the island’s last homestead field — drawing walkers of all ages. The trail connects with nearly all other island paths and is open for year-round recreation.  Bangor Daily News

  • Ace Flagg—a freshman on UMaine’s men’s basketball team from Newport—earned the 'Honey Badger' nickname before playing AAU ball and is set to bring his relentless energy to the court.
