  • Rosanna’s Readers hosted a fun run at Blue Hill school on Oct 4th that raised $10,000 to provide free books—organizers said the funds will support literacy programs and future book giveaways for local students.  WABI 5
  • Maine Veterans' Homes of Bangor celebrated 30 years of supporting veterans with a gathering that brought together residents, staff, and family. BUSINESS NEWS

  • Elmet Technologies of Lewiston secured a multimillion-dollar U.S. Navy contract and will expand operations by hiring skilled workers to meet rising demand—using new robotic equipment to boost production at its Michigan plant. The company will work 20 hours a day to help fulfill orders for specialized metals.  News Center Maine
  • A Maine flying business said it is doing well despite a drought that has reduced the fall foliage, which normally draws tourists. The company will add more routes next month—an effort to boost local air travel and sustain its growth.  WABI 5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A new law took effect on Sept. 24 that requires the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife to launch a pilot program for electronic deer tagging—Nate Webb said the department will report back to the Legislature by Jan. 14 to update on its progress.  Bangor Daily News
  • Applications are open for Maine-based organizations to apply for funding from the Penobscot County Opioid Settlement Fund Grant to support programs fighting the opioid epidemic in Penobscot County — the grant offers up to $400,000 in tiered awards for one-year projects, with a deadline of November 15 and an informational webinar on October 8.  FOX Bangor
  • Orono residents will vote on Nov. 4 for two three‐year council seats as Andrea Hardison seeks reelection—Colleen Marzilli and John Quinn run for their first seats. A candidate forum is set for Oct. 9 at 6 p.m. at the Council Chambers while voters also cast ballots for a school board seat at the Collins Center for the Arts.  Bangor Daily News

  • The Maine Black Bears beat Bryant 34-14 on Saturday as Carter Peevy threw for 338 yards with three touchdowns and Scott Woods caught for 103 yards with two touchdowns—ending a four-game losing streak. The win is their second in a row and marks the third time in four seasons the team has bounced back after a slow start.  WABI 5
