COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Bangor Humane Society is holding its 32nd annual Paws on Parade fundraiser at the Bangor Waterfront today—dogs are not allowed because of a parvovirus outbreak. Organizers said the event will include food trucks and vendors to help meet a $115,000 goal for animal care and adoption.  News Center Maine

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Maine Sardine Festival is taking place today at the Penobscot Marine Museum from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., where visitors enjoy live music, kids’ activities, food trucks, sardine tastings, a sea life touch tank, storytelling, and demonstrations — all free for the public. Rita Willey, the five-time sardine packing champion, will host a meet and greet.  WABI 5

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Maine regulators denied exemptions for products with forever chemicals—like nonstick cookware, upholstered furniture, cosmetics, and cleaners—and set a ban to take effect next year. This decision builds on the state’s efforts to limit exposure to PFAS.  Bangor Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Furloughed federal workers in Maine can call the unemployment office to apply for benefits during the shutdown while essential workers working without pay cannot apply—affected employees may also qualify for up to $6,000 no-interest loans if the shutdown lasts more than a week.  Bangor Daily News
  • Gov. Janet Mills said she will vote no on the November ballot measure that would restrict absentee voting by cutting voting days, ending automatic status for seniors and disabled voters, banning prepaid postage, and limiting ballot request methods—she argued that these changes would make it harder for some voters to cast their ballots.  News Center Maine
  • Penobscot County faces a $3.5 million gap in its jail budget that could force a 14% tax hike if municipalities do not cut spending — county leaders plan to work with towns and hold a budget hearing on Nov. 18.  The Piscataquis Observer

  • Dexter Regional High School football team is competing in T-Mobile’s Friday Night 5G Lights Sweepstakes for a chance to win a $1M field upgrade—voters can cast one vote each day until Oct. 24. Athletic Director Adam Gudroe said the improvements would tackle the uneven field and lack of lighting, aiming to boost the school's athletic facilities.  Bangor Daily News
  • The UMaine women’s soccer team played a 1-1 tie with Bryant University on Thursday night at the new $27.3 million New Balance Track and Field and Soccer Complex—sophomore Hilary Washington scored early while junior Colleen Ardolino equalized late before a lively crowd.  Bangor Daily News
