COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Harold J. Crosby Community Band said after a successful band camp weekend they will now meet on Tuesdays from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center on Main St. in Dexter — new lessons start at 3 p.m. and optional group sessions begin at 1 p.m. in Newport.  The Piscataquis Observer
  • The Bangor Region YMCA is breaking ground on a new facility on Main Street this week after raising $43.1 million—qualifying it for a $10 million New Markets Tax Credit—and construction will finish in fall 2027.   • Credit unions across Maine are launching a $100,000 Ending Hunger Challenge this October to help families facing food insecurity amid federal cuts to SNAP and Medicaid.   • On September 30, the Penobscot Nation hosted Orange Shirt Day in Indian Island to remember children abused or killed in boarding schools — dozens marched through the streets and later joined a meal at Indian Island School to honor their lost heritage.  FOX Bangor

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Literacy Volunteers of Bangor is seeking more volunteers for its tutoring program, with applications available on the group’s website according to executive director Mary Marin Taylor.  FOX Bangor
  • Maine’s free community college program helped students like Salem Carmichael attend school without cost, but its future remains uncertain as lawmakers review detailed cost estimates and impact data for graduates beyond the class of 2025 — experts say more information is expected by mid-December. Legislators and system leaders are working together to decide whether to continue funding the program, leaving the system in limbo while they weigh the benefits and costs.  Bangor Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Daniel Carson, a Bangor City Council candidate, said he will push for building 700 affordable housing units and expanding shelter space to help address homelessness—he also vowed to partner with state task forces for property tax relief and raise wages to reduce staff turnover.   • After a monthslong dispute ended with no deal, Northern Light Health’s contract with Anthem expired and many private and employer-based patients will face out-of-network costs for primary and specialty care today — while hospital care, Medicare Advantage, and emergency services remain in network.  Bangor Daily News

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Last week, a hunting guide recounted how he, alongside a father—daughter duo, paddled more than 50 miles and hiked over 40 to scout wildlife management zone 28, facing a 25% success rate compared to 70% last year. Despite repeated calls and careful scouting, a promising bull did not respond to calls—highlighting that moose and weather remain unpredictable in the hunt.  Bangor Daily News
