  • Dorian Pillsbury, a young Brewer resident with a big heart, hosted his second annual D-Max's Birthday Wish on September 28 to donate cake supplies to local food pantries—he aims to collect 4,000 items so that no child goes without a birthday cake. The event featured games, cupcakes, and crafts and follows a previous year when his efforts earned him recognition from the Little League World Series.  FOX Bangor

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Maine is facing a shortage of about 80 school bus drivers that has led to lost instructional time — higher overtime costs and cancelled activities. Transportation coordinator Cheryl Brackett said schools are sharing drivers and funding training for new hires to ease the problem.  Bangor Daily News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The U.S. Drought Monitor noted that extreme and severe drought continues to spread across Maine despite some rain, and a dry summer left many areas five to 10 inches behind on rainfall. More than 170 Mainers reported their wells ran dry this year—experts said short rains do not reach deep aquifers to replenish water supplies.  The Piscataquis Observer

  • St. Joseph Hospital held its annual Commit to Community event on Sunday to raise funds for its SAFE program that supports survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence and child abuse—raising about $235K to help nurses meet a 30% rise in care demand for trauma-informed services.  News Center Maine

  • Elroy Morgan from Charleston grows giant pumpkins by heating the soil and using a greenhouse—he battles a summer drought and plans to drop off a pumpkin in Bangor for a guess the weight contest while he works toward a one-ton pumpkin next year.  WABI 5

SPORTS NEWS

  • Former UMaine star Zavier Scott caught his first NFL touchdown pass—a 16 yard score in the fourth quarter—in Dublin on Sunday for the Minnesota Vikings against the Pittsburgh Steelers, earning more playing time after injuries to teammates.  Bangor Daily News
  • Cooper Flagg and Michael Jordan met at the Ryder Cup tournament last weekend when the Dallas Mavericks rookie shook hands with the basketball legend at Bethpage Black—Flagg said he looks up to Jordan as a dream golf partner. Flagg also mentioned he wishes to join Celtics star Tatum and Steph Curry for a round as he uses golf to train his mind and relax.  Bangor Daily News
