ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Fuzzy hickory tussock caterpillars are common in fall and their barbed hairs can stick to skin—causing redness and a rash as they move from hardwood trees to find shelter. Residents are advised to avoid touching these caterpillars to prevent skin irritation.  Bangor Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Construction began earlier this summer on a 0.38 mile pedestrian and bike path along Fourteenth Street to connect Ohio Street to downtown and the Kenduskeag Stream Trail—costing $463,000 from city funds and MaineDOT. The project will finish in late fall to improve pedestrian safety at this busy area.  FOX Bangor

HEALTH NEWS

  • Northern Light Mayo Hospital's Walk for Hope event brought over 330 people to Dover-Foxcroft on September 20 and raised nearly $49,000 to support cancer care at the Tracy Hibbard Kasprzak Cancer Treatment Center—donations will be accepted through the end of September for the Cancer Center and Patient Assistance Fund.  FOX Bangor
  • Hundreds walked on the Bangor Waterfront last Saturday in the annual Out of the Darkness walk hosted by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention to raise suicide awareness and honor those lost—participants shared personal stories while the Maine Crisis Line reported high call volume, and another walk will take place next Saturday in Portland.  WABI 5

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • On Sept 18, Tasha Zickefoose shot her first black bear weighing 466 pounds with the help of hounds in Bowerbank, WMD 14—dogs tracked the animal for nearly two weeks before a two-hour chase near a body of water allowed her to take the shot. This hunt marked a key milestone for Zickefoose and her team.  The Piscataquis Observer

SPORTS NEWS

  • Bangor High School's golf team beat MDI in a match at Kebo Valley Golf Club in Bar Harbor — Bangor scored 159 while MDI scored 189, which improved the team's record to 7—0.  Bangor Daily News
  • Sunday River in Newry tested its snowguns on North Peak’s Lower Downdraft trail as it prepares for the winter ski season; the resort will open when overnight temperatures drop between 25 and 30 degrees—last year it opened in the second week of November—and officials have not set an official date.  WABI 5
