COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The 10th Annual Wellspring Race for Recovery is set for this weekend on the Bangor Waterfront — pre-registration starts at 9:00 a.m. and the race begins at 10:00 a.m.  WABI 5
  • NFR Maine presents Storm, a one-year-old shepherd mix available for adoption in Bangor, who is described as a loving and people-pleasing companion (ready to join a new family) and now available through NFR Maine (adoption requirements apply).  WABI 5

CULTURE NEWS

  • Maine Lobster Week will begin on Sunday with over 60 restaurants offering three-course meals or lobster specials to promote consumption and honor dedicated fishermen. A new Lobster Roll Remix event will take place on Thursday at Southern Maine Community College—with 10 restaurants offering international twists and four local businesses providing nationwide shipping options.  WGAN

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Bangor Savings Bank Foundation awarded over $86,000 in grants to 27 nonprofits across New England — including Bangor’s new AHEAD that helps people with employment access. The funding supports programs in workforce development, health and wellness, education and the arts.  WABI 5

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Saint Joseph’s College launched a free tuition program for eligible Maine residents under the Monk’s Lantern Initiative—covering full tuition for up to four years if students maintain a 3.4 GPA, full-time enrollment, campus residency, and a household income under $100,000. Students will pay additional expenses for meals, housing, supplies, and books.  WABI 5

HEALTH NEWS

  • On Sept 18, Maine and six other states formed a public health collaborative to share vaccine supplies and plan for emergencies amid upheaval at the CDC caused by political interference from Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.—each state will keep its own health programs.  Maine Public

SPORTS NEWS

  • Medomak Valley girls varsity beat Belfast 2-1 today after a tied first half in which Scarlett Flint scored from a corner kick by Haylee Chandler and Rachel Richardson secured the win with a late goal—Belfast’s goalie made key saves as Medomak increased their shots and corners in the second half. The game showed the team’s steady improvement against a determined opponent.  Bangor Daily News
  • Dexter and Susan Paine, owners of the Maine Mariners, took a minority stake in Portland Hearts of Pine—underscoring their commitment to local sports. Soccer club president Kevin Schohl said their expertise will help the team meet its long-term goals.  News Center Maine
  • Larry Mahoney, a sports reporter who covered Maine sports for over 50 years, will be inducted into the Maine Sports Hall of Fame this weekend.   • Bangor High School’s golf team won against Presque Isle at Bangor Municipal Golf Course with scores of 171 to 177, keeping their season record at 6-0—medallist Jacoby Harvey led a strong performance. The win continues the team’s unbeaten run this season.  Bangor Daily News
