COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Chester 'Chet' Barrett and his son Aaron from Addison died in January when bad weather hit their scallop boat, and after community debate their names were added to the Lost Fishermen’s Memorial in Lubec—resolving doubts over eligibility rules. Family and friends had pushed for their inclusion, leading committee members to review guidelines before making the final decision.  Bangor Daily News
  • Today, the Cole Transportation Museum is hosting Heroes and Heritage Week with a Classic Car Show running from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at 405 Perry Road—organizers will award a special prize for the most patriotic vehicle while raising funds for Maine veterans.  WABI 5

CULTURE NEWS

  • Levant’s Treworgy Family Orchards corn maze has won USA Today’s 10BEST Readers’ Choice Awards for the fourth year in a row and marks its 25th anniversary; the new design—called Whale of a Tale after Robert McCloskey’s classic book—will offer free admission on Sept. 20–21 for commercial fishing workers. The farm also placed second for Best Pumpkin Patch.  WABI 5

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Central Maine Power gave notice on Sept. 16 that it will ask regulators for permission to raise rates each year for the next five years starting Oct. 1. A typical home bill using 550 kilowatt hours will rise by $35 per month overall, with a $17 jump in the first year + the proposal is expected to generate $427 million in revenue.  The Piscataquis Observer

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A local Girl Scout Troop in Bangor built a pollinator garden at Mary Snow School during the summer that will serve as an outdoor classroom and supply food to a local bank and school kitchen — the project earned them a Bronze Award. The girls each worked 25 hours and received a 500 dollar grant and community donations, and they will be recognized by Girl Scouts of Maine in the spring.  FOX Bangor
  • Today the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry said that warm weather is keeping fall foliage from changing and dropping many leaves—cooler temperatures expected by the weekend should bring more color.  FOX Bangor
  • Foliage is starting to show in northern Maine as cooler weather makes trees turn orange and red. State forestry officials said brilliant colors will peak later this fall—drawing visitors to the season.  Bangor Daily News

HEALTH NEWS

  • During National Suicide Prevention Month, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is hosting Out of the Darkness walks in Bangor at Waterfront Park on Sept. 20 and in Portland at Fort Allen Park on Sept. 27. George Mageles, the chair for the Portland event, said nearly a thousand people will join with check-in at 9 a.m. and the walks starting at 10 a.m.—a chance for the community to remember and heal.  News Center Maine

  • Husson men’s basketball coach Warren Caruso, who has nearly 600 wins over more than 30 years, said his restaurant experience taught him to handle high pressure—he will be inducted into the Maine Sports Hall of Fame on Sunday.  Bangor Daily News
