COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Maine Savings Federal Credit Union launched the Maine Savings Foundation— a new philanthropic initiative that will invest in Maine communities by awarding five $5,000 grants to local organizations. The Beyond Banking Grant Program will accept applications until Oct. 6— with grant recipients announced on Dec. 10.  The Piscataquis Observer

CRIME NEWS

  • The Maine Supreme Judicial Court will hear arguments on Wednesday from 41-year-old Perry woman Kailie Brackett, who was sentenced to 55 years for the murder of 43-year-old Kim Neptune—her attorneys argue that key evidence including a clinical podiatrist's testimony, autopsy photos, and cell tower findings should not have been allowed.  WABI 5

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Maine chaplains including retired maritime chaplain Thomas Kircher are addressing climate anxiety among people facing tougher weather and isolation. Local faith leaders have launched support programs—studies show increased stress as climate change brings more extreme weather.  Bangor Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows rejected a second DOJ request for voter data on over 1 million Mainers that asked for private details like driver’s license numbers and parts of social security numbers—her office said the federal request lacked a good reason. The rejection came 10 days after a first request was denied and included demands for registration applications from Dec. 1, 2023 to July 1, 2025.  News Center Maine

HEALTH NEWS

  • On Monday, Medicare specialist Ann Shae explained the often confusing rules of Medicare during a Healthy Aging Spotlight session at WABI as part of an Eastern Area Agency on Aging effort to help Mainers understand their health care choices.  WABI 5
  • UMaine and state conservation officials confirmed in July that an invasive Asian longhorned tick was found in southern Maine—its farthest northeast sighting in the U.S. The juvenile specimen does not yet reproduce, and experts are closely monitoring the situation for potential public health risks.  Bangor Daily News

  • University of New Hampshire sophomore Ruth White won her first college cross country meet today on the UNH course with a time of 10:59.42, beating Siena Brunetti by about four seconds — her coach praised her natural abilities and work ethic as she begins her fall season.  Bangor Daily News
  • UMaine will allow fans to bring purchased beer, spiked seltzers and wine to their seats at hockey and football games starting at the end of September—outside alcohol remains banned and staff will enforce ID checks and drink limits to keep events safe.  Bangor Daily News
