- ➤ Maine Savings Federal Credit Union launched the Maine Savings Foundation— a new philanthropic initiative that will invest in Maine communities by awarding five $5,000 grants to local organizations. - ➤ The Maine Supreme Judicial Court will hear arguments on Wednesday from 41-year-old Perry woman Kailie Brackett, who was sentenced to 55 years for the murder of 43-year-old Kim Neptune—her attorneys argue that key evidence including a clinical podiatrist's testimony, autopsy photos, and cell tower findings should not have been allowed. - ➤ Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows rejected a second DOJ request for voter data on over 1 million Mainers that asked for private details like driver’s license numbers and parts of social security numbers—her office said the federal request lacked a good reason. - ➤ UMaine and state conservation officials confirmed in July that an invasive Asian longhorned tick was found in southern Maine—its farthest northeast sighting in the U.S. The juvenile specimen does not yet reproduce, and experts are closely monitoring the situation for potential public health risks.
