COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Maine faith leaders are setting up protocols to guide interactions with federal agents and help immigrants know their rights amid rising fears of immigration raids. They will launch an ICE Watch hotline this fall—church members are readying themselves to respond if raids occur.  Bangor Daily News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A Penobscot County business, Maine Ride Detailing, was ordered to pay $139K in unpaid wages and tips after it withheld money from 29 employees over five years. The court ruled that the sum—including a civil penalty—will be collected by the Department of Labor for distribution to the affected workers.  Bangor Daily News

CRIME NEWS

  • Maine Warden Service in Palmyra charged five people in a deer poaching case after issuing 31 summonses, seizing five deer, multiple firearms and crossbows, and recovering stolen hunting equipment—one suspect failed to appear in court and faced a $2,300 fine.  FOX Bangor
  • Gregory Heimann, a Maine man wanted for making false statements to the Department of Veterans Affairs, was arrested in Missouri on Aug.21 after faking his own drowning by leaving his home on a canoe near the Canadian border—he will face extradition and possibly more charges in Maine court.  Bangor Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Bangor City Council voted Monday to censure Councilor Joseph Leonard after he made inappropriate remarks at a May budget workshop that led to Finance Director David Little resigning at a cost of $100,000—Leonard apologized for his bombastic tone and announced an ethics investigation on the council, with the vote passing 6—2.  WABI 5
  • Bangor City Council will vote Monday on whether to censure Councilor Joe Leonard for remarks that cost the city nearly $100,000—his words at a May 7 meeting led to Finance Director David Little’s resignation and spurred an investigation that confirmed the cost. This would be Leonard’s second formal reprimand from the council.  Bangor Daily News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Local organizers and community groups held an Overdose Awareness Day event on Monday outside Bangor City Hall and in Pierce Park—inscribing names in remembrance of loved ones lost to overdoses—and urged officials to use opioid settlement funds for rehabilitation, overdose prevention and syringe service programs. They also announced plans for an International Overdose Awareness Day event on Aug. 31 to further highlight the need for these life-saving changes.  Bangor Daily News
  • On Monday evening, Needlepoint Sanctuary held an overdose awareness vigil in Pierce Park to remember loved ones lost to overdose and to ask for more help from local and state officials. Organizers marched to Bangor City Hall and marked the names of those lost with chalk—calling for stronger safety programs.  FOX Bangor
