ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A 22-foot motorboat hit a ledge and sank near Stand-In Point at noon on Sunday—11 passengers used paddle boards to reach shore, with one passenger treated for a minor injury on scene. WABI 5
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Graham McTavish, the Outlander actor, attended the Maine Highland Games and Scottish Festival held Aug. 16th and 17th at the Windsor Fairgrounds—marking the event's first time in Windsor and featuring traditional Highland activities like throwing the Braemar stone. He also hosted fireside chats and a Q&A session, although state licensing rules prevented him from offering whiskey samples. Bangor Daily News
- ➤ Stephen King attended a book release at Bookspace on Columbia Street where he introduced a new anthology building upon his novel The Stand — he was joined by authors Richard Chizmar, Catherynne M. Valente, and Michael Koryta. The anthology was released worldwide on August 19th and The Briar Patch bookstore in Bangor has sold out its copies with more on order. WABI 5
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ BangorHousing is planning renovations to its affordable properties as it moves to voucher-based contracts and opens new apartments for seniors and a supportive housing facility for homeless people. The agency will invest about $1 million to upgrade 75 units at Birch Circle and Griffin Park in first quarter 2026 — and begin major renovations at Nason Park Manor for older or disabled residents in the second half of 2026 while holding tenant meetings to share details. - ➤ Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield announced that Convenient MD’s primary care office at 689 Broadway in Bangor is now part of its network—this move aims to expand access to primary care, especially after Northern Light Health broke off contract talks last week. - ➤ An invasive Asian longhorned tick was found for the first time in Maine, state officials and UMaine researchers announced Tuesday after a specimen was collected in Cumberland County through UMaine’s passive tick surveillance program — additional field surveys did not find more ticks. The juvenile nymph cannot reproduce, but experts warned that females can breed without mating, which could quickly increase the risk of harm to livestock and humans. News Center Maine
