COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ The Bangor Area Homeless Shelter will close its warming center this winter to add five shelter beds and will still offer emergency warming space—director Boyd Kronholm said the change uses staff better while local centers may face extra strain. The shelter on Main Street will continue its day program from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. throughout the season. Bangor Daily News
- ➤ Leasing begins today at Theresa's Place, a permanent housing facility in Bangor for people at risk of homelessness. The operations manager said six units will be leased today and 41 more will be filled in the coming weeks+all tenants will sign a one-year lease. WABI 5
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Glenburn man (19-year-old Ethan Herbert) was arrested on Sunday after he attacked a 59-year-old family member with a hatchet on Pushaw Road around 6:40 p.m., the victim was taken to the hospital with serious injuries and he faces charges of domestic violence, aggravated assault and attempted murder. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The University of Maine has partnered with a Washington State family who lost their son to hazing to expand HazingInfo.org—now covering all 50 states, Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico—to help students and parents learn about hazing risks before fall classes start. WABI 5
- ➤ Downeast School in Bangor, along with Turner and Leeds Central near Lewiston, will join a five-year pilot program that mixes special and general education settings to give all students a chance to learn together. The state and the University of Maine will train teachers and adjust classroom schedules—federal funds will support the new approach that may lower special education costs. News Center Maine

- ➤ Maine signed a bill in June that adds coercion to the domestic abuse statute to include nonphysical tactics like financial monitoring, stalking and intimidation. Lawmakers say the change will help survivors even as some legal groups worry about potential misuse. Bangor Daily News
