COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Families stepped up to bat Saturday at Wayne’s Wiffle for a Wish, a fundraiser that raised money for Make-A-Wish Maine with a large wiffle ball tournament and sales of raffle tickets and t-shirts. Founder Wayne Harvey — who started the event after his daughter’s birth — said the tournament has grown over 17 years and plans are underway for next year.  WABI 5
  • Ernest is a 6-year-old hound with a spinal cord disease who is available for adoption at the Bangor Humane Society—he needs an owner who can keep him up to date with vet visits and care for him as he loves snuggling on the couch. The shelter is open Monday through Friday from 1—6 p.m. and Saturday from 12—6 p.m.  News Center Maine

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Maine farmers experienced moderate drought as of Friday, and many reported crops like blueberries drying up while some chose which ones to save. Potato growers in Aroostook County irrigated nonstop — farms without irrigation lost their potatoes and significant rain is not forecast for the next few weeks.  WGAN
  • Maine has seen more wildfire smoke as climate change makes conditions hotter and drier in Canada—causing fires to burn larger areas and send extra smoke our way. Experts warn that if steps to lower emissions are not taken, air quality will worsen.  News Center Maine
