CRIME NEWS

  • Maine DHHS said about $76,000 in SNAP benefits were stolen from roughly 300 households this week—Fidelity Information Services is investigating the theft and EBT cardholders are urged to change their PIN.  News Center Maine
  • EBT cardholders in Maine are warned to change their PIN and use the lock feature after reported benefit theft affected about 300 households that just received August SNAP benefits—these households now face no food help until September. The Department of Health and Human Services said the incident is unfolding and more households could be impacted.  FOX Bangor

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Maine grocery prices dropped in July to $60.28 for a basket of ten staples after egg prices fell by about $1.35 per dozen since January—though pork, milk, beef, and wild blueberries modestly increased. These figures buck the national trend and mark a six-month decline as reported by Maine Public.  Maine Public

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Novartis, a New Jersey pharmaceutical company, filed a lawsuit in Maine district court against Attorney General Aaron Frey — saying the state law protecting the federal 340B drug pricing program improperly alters federal rules. Supporters, including hospital and primary care groups, said the law set to take effect on Sept. 24 preserves affordable access to prescription drugs.  WABI 5
  • The U.S. Coast Guard announced it would delay removing navigational buoys in New England waters—especially nearly 150 in the Gulf of Maine—after receiving feedback from mariners and lawmakers. A revised proposal will be issued this fall with another public comment period, and changes will take effect no earlier than 2026.  Maine Public

HEALTH NEWS

  • Northern Light Health ended contract negotiations with Anthem in a letter that detailed repeated delays — canceled meetings and no response to a counteroffer. Anthem said it remains committed to working together while noting concerns over quality compensation — with Northern Light set to go out-of-network starting in October if no deal is reached.  Maine Public
  • Northern Light Health ended its talks with Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield on Friday and will be out-of-network starting Oct. 1—blaming Anthem for not making timely payments and using a hard prior authorization process. Anthem said it remains disappointed and will keep the lines of communication open for a better offer in the future.  Bangor Daily News
