ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A structure fire on Tuesday afternoon at Colonial Village Apartments in Veazie destroyed one building and damaged others, leaving multiple families displaced—some residents were taken to hospital with minor injuries while firefighters treated ten for heat exhaustion in 90-degree heat. - ➤ Southern Baptist leaders report that church membership in Maine is growing despite national declines, with new congregations such as Stillwater Baptist Church in Orono having held their first services on August 3. They plan to reach local residents through outreach and community support—an effort seen as an opportunity in a region with few established churches. Bangor Daily News
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Due to extremely dry conditions, North Maine Woods and KI Jo-Mary Forest are not issuing fire permits for unmaintained backcountry sites today—fires are allowed only at established campgrounds and private camps. Maine Forest Rangers rated fire danger as high at 9 a.m. and the Maine Forest Service advises that any burning occur only after 5 p.m. or be avoided altogether. Bangor Daily News
- ➤ Maine remains under high wildfire risk as hot and dry weather continues this week — officials with the Maine Forest Service said fire crews increased staffing and urge residents to avoid burning until rain arrives.
