GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office turned on 36 body cameras and 36 dashboard cameras in April after a year-long delay caused by underestimated costs for maintaining video footage— the devices were bought for $243,000 with a $50,000 grant covering start-up expenses. Sheriff Morton said the cameras now record police interactions and help gather evidence.  The Piscataquis Observer
  • Early last spring, Maine towns began drafting new rules for flood zone development as they updated local ordinances to meet new federal standards. Scarborough now requires that new buildings or major repairs raise the lowest floor two feet above flood level, while Wells uses the total cost of projects to trigger the change—local officials say these measures help reduce future flood risks.  News Center Maine

HEALTH NEWS

  • Bangor City Council approved spending $550K from opioid funds to launch a two-year HIV case management program for people affected by the outbreak — the program will hire two case managers to help clients with paperwork, appointments and transportation. The initiative aims to reduce viral loads and slow the spread of HIV — a response to a growing need since the previous service ended.  Bangor Daily News
