- ➤ The city planning board approved a permit Tuesday for an expansion of Bangor's only low-barrier homeless shelter—adding nearly 6,500 square feet and 12 beds to Hope House Health and Living Center. Construction will finish in May 2026 to help meet the growing need for shelter beds amid homelessness and the opioid crisis. Bangor Daily News
- ➤ On Thursday, August 7, Penquis and Heart of Maine United Way held a Fill the Bus backpack drive outside Walmart in Bangor to collect school supplies for students in Penobscot, Piscataquis, and Knox counties as part of the 'We’ve Got Your Back' program, which serves 1,200 kids with another 200 waiting. Today, a Fill the Van drive will take place at Walmart in Lincoln and donations can be dropped off at any Penquis location + online or in cash until August 13, with supplies set for distribution by August 16. - ➤ Bangor Public Library hosted an open house on Thursday night from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Cyr Gallery to showcase Patterns and Textures of Bangor, a community exhibit celebrating 150 years of the Bangor Art Society with crayon rubbing art from local residents — the display will remain open until late September for visitors to add their own creations. - ➤ A Maine Forest Service report confirms that Beech Leaf Disease now exists in every county—it was first detected in Franklin and has spread inland as far as Merrill. The microscopic nematode damages trees by deforming leaves, and researchers are studying effective treatments. WABI 5
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Bangor City Hall at 73 Harlow St. is set to reopen Monday after a 20-month renovation that cost about $10 million—$6 million of which came from a bond approved in 2019. The updated building will host a ribbon cutting at 5:15 p.m. Monday night before the City Council meeting. WABI 5
- ➤ Maine joined Operation Robocall Roundup to reduce illegal robocalls when Attorney General Frey and 50 other attorneys general sent warning letters on Thursday to 37 voice service companies—demanding they halt illegal calls—and to 99 downstream providers for not following FCC rules. The task force aims to stop companies from routing calls that lead to scams. WGAN

- ➤ Penobscot County now has 28 HIV cases from an outbreak that began in October 2023 (the latest case being the second in July) as confirmed by the Maine CDC. Community groups in Bangor are building new HIV support systems while the city council will vote Monday on a proposal from the Opioid Settlement Funds Advisory Committee (a move to set up an intensive case management system). - ➤ Zillow data shows that the average rental in Bangor now costs $1,600 per month, double the rate before the pandemic.
