- ➤ Local gardeners in Bangor and Brewer are making the most of small urban spaces by growing produce and flowers using creative methods such as repurposing materials and companion planting—techniques that help overcome challenges like poor soil and limited light. - ➤ Four hikers spent the night stranded on Katahdin’s Knife Edge and were rescued Friday, with a 47-year-old woman who injured her knee being airlifted by a Maine Army National Guard Blackhawk helicopter to a hospital from Millinocket Airport—while the other hikers were safely escorted down the mountain. - ➤ Penobscot County deputies credited a dispatcher who used geolocation to guide a deputy to an injured and lost woman in Carmel on Sunday afternoon; the Carmel Fire Department then carried her to safety where she received medical care (authorities say the coordinated response saved crucial time). ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The antlerless deer lottery closes at 11:59 p.m. Thursday with 123,695 permits available in wildlife management zones 17, 23 and 25—lottery drawing will take place on Aug. 14, with payment due by Sep. 11 and extra permits available for sale on Sep. 16. Bangor Daily News
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Penobscot County Commission selected a 30 acre site at Ammo Industrial Park in Hampden for the planned new jail by signing an option that gives the county exclusive rights to purchase the property while additional tests are pending+ wetlands reviews show the land is viable.
