Good morning, Bangor. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 22nd of July.

CRIME NEWS

  • Maine officials warned that scammers posing as law enforcement have been calling Mainers to demand payment for fake fines or missed court dates — calls that have been reported since 2024 and remain under investigation.  News Center Maine

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Friday, conservationists and members of the Penobscot Nation rallied against the state’s decision to expand the Juniper Ridge landfill, arguing that the project worsens pollution and environmental injustice for tribal lands—issues that have long affected nearby residents. The state defended its ruling and said it would add PFAS treatment during the licensing process while a judge reviews the appeal with no set timeline.  Bangor Daily News
  • Maine regulators recommended that the Board of Environmental Protection keep the PFAS ban on nonstick cookware — ruling out exemptions for kitchen appliances, coffeemakers, electric fragrance warmers and cleaning product components. The department said there was no legal reason to exempt cookware from the ban and the board will soon decide whether to accept the recommendations.  Bangor Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Bangor City Hall at 73 Harlow St will reopen Aug. 11 after 20 months of work that made the building accessible and secure—municipal services will be paused Aug. 7-8 for the move. City officials said a grand opening ceremony at 5:15 p.m. on Aug. 11 will mark the first City Council meeting in the updated facility.  Bangor Daily News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Penobscot County has reported 26 HIV cases that mainly affect people who are unhoused or inject drugs. Health officials increased testing access and prevention programs—yesterday was Zero HIV Stigma Day—to reduce stigma and slow the outbreak.  WABI 5
  • A new law signed by Gov. Mills expands charity care by raising the income cap from 150% to 200% of the federal poverty level and will take effect next July. Maine hospitals worry that federal Medicaid cuts, which will remove coverage from about 34,000 Mainers, may force them to cut services—adding strain to budgets—and risk reducing available care.  Bangor Daily News
