Good morning, Bangor. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 21st of July.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Orono’s Church of Universal Fellowship will repair its steeple this fall and has asked the town council for a $5,000 donation; the church will host events to raise funds and the council will review the request at its July 28 meeting — this work helps preserve the 100-year-old structure.  Bangor Daily News
  • Thunder Road Farm in Corinna is creating a corn maze featuring Cooper Flagg from nearby Newport—he appears shown about to dunk a basketball. The maze will open on weekends from September 13th to October 26th.  WABI 5
  • The Maine Community Foundation launched two grant programs—Land for Communities to support local land projects and Maine Women’s Fund to offer multi-year grants for women and girls. Land for Communities will accept proposals twice a year with deadlines on March 16 and Sept 15 and host a webinar on Wednesday, July 23, while the Maine Women’s Fund webinar is scheduled for Tuesday, July 22.  The Piscataquis Observer
  • Residents have complained that the city's four 24-hour public restrooms are unsanitary, with used needles found, missing toilet paper, and two overdoses reported by police. Some locals say the issues show a need for closer monitoring and more frequent cleaning — concerns that leave many wondering how the facilities will be maintained safely.  Bangor Daily News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Two people were rescued from the water in Hermon today after their boat capsized on Hermon Pond—both wore life jackets and were evaluated for hypothermia on shore.  FOX Bangor

CULTURE NEWS

  • Andrea Gibson—celebrated poet and former champion point guard for the 1993 Calais girls basketball team—died last Monday at age 49 after a long battle with cancer. Their influence in both performance art and local sports—rooted in a storied season and lasting community impact—continues to be remembered by friends and residents.  Bangor Daily News

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • At 3 a.m. in mid-July, a Bangor resident found that a bear family—one large sow and two cubs—knocked over his cheap bird feeder, prompting him to bring the feeders inside and secure his yard with a marine airhorn and strong flashlight. He later stored the feeders indoors for the rest of the summer following advice from biologists to avoid encouraging further bear visits.  Bangor Daily News

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Maine’s housing market stays a seller’s market as more homes come up for sale—real estate agents say rising inventory and steadier costs hint at a slow move toward balance but buyers still face stiff competition. Local experts warn that limited new construction and high mortgage rates keep prices steady—leaving sellers with the advantage.  Bangor Daily News
