- ➤ Wayne’s Wiffle for a Wish will take place at the Union Street Complex on August 16 to benefit children of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Maine. Organizers aim to exceed last year's $21,700 and bring their total near a quarter million dollars raised over 16 years — Wayne Harvey said. WABI 5
- ➤ Adoptive and Foster Families of Maine and The Kinship Program are hosting their annual Fill-A-Backpack Drive as the new school year nears, providing school supplies, clothing and hygiene products to kids in foster, adoptive and kinship care—donations can be dropped off at Brewer or Saco offices by July 31. - ➤ A 14 year old boy from Orrington went missing after leaving his home early last Friday and was seen in Brewer, according to the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office; he is 5 foot 3 & weighs 150 pounds with blonde hair & blue eyes, and anyone with information is urged to call 207-947-4585. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Nathan Wilbur was named president of the Atlantic Salmon Federation and he plans to remove dams—helping fish cross rivers—and restore habitats to boost Atlantic salmon returns from 668,600 to 1 million. His plan includes research and dam removals like the slated Mayo Mill dam in Dover-Foxcroft to let salmon reach their old spawning grounds. Bangor Daily News
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Four new direct care volunteers completed a four-week training program at the Guilford Public Library and are ready to offer non-medical care like transportation and companionship in areas including Dover-Foxcroft, Greenville, Sebec and Abbot. The training was led by Tracey Gray and supported by a Bangor Savings Bank grant — helping the hospice meet the growing need for services. The Piscataquis Observer
