COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Penobscot County Cares partnered with Bangor Public Library to cover monthly costs for the new free public phone from Maine’s Public Interest Payphone program — the second phone installed in Bangor. The initiative supports callers needing to reach services outside the local area and follows the distribution of nearly 200 cell phones over the past nine months.  WABI 5

CRIME NEWS

  • The owners of Northern Bay Organics in Penobscot closed the farm until legal issues are resolved after Jason Langley faced an alleged assault charge at Acadia National Park — federal officers served an arrest warrant at their home while the farmers, who deny the charges and say his autism played a role, work through the fallout.  Bangor Daily News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Maine System approved a pilot for a 90 credit bachelor’s degree for adult learners on three campuses today—this program is for those who have been out of college for at least two years and aims to boost economic mobility and meet workforce needs. Trustee Chair Trish Riley said the pilot will help adults balancing work and family while supporting the traditional 120 credit program.  FOX Bangor

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A new state law called 'An Act to Promote Firewood Banks in Maine' requires the state's Bureau of Forestry to provide resources for starting wood banks so Mainers can get free firewood in winter. State Rep. Michael Ray—a wood bank volunteer—said the law will ease the work for those who gather and prepare firewood.  News Center Maine
