Good morning, Bangor.
The Where’s Waldo event is back in downtown Bangor, and locals are joining a hunt to find a man known as Waldo — a figure in glasses, a knit cap, and a striped shirt — by visiting 25 local businesses for guide book stamps.
The Waldo party will be held on August 1 at The Briar Patch starting at 4 p.m.
Bar Harbor Whale Watch is offering three birding cruises that let passengers see seabirds and marine life while visiting sites like Petit Manan and Mount Desert Rock.
The Downeast Offshore Seabirds and Lighthouse Cruise leaves on July 19, the Cashes Ledge Whale and Seabird Cruise is set for August 23, and Maine Audubon’s pelagic seabird cruise departs at 6 a.m. on Sept. 14—registration for the Audubon trip began July 7.
Officials remain in preventative mode as the emerald ash borer (a green insect that bores into tree bark) threatens Maine's ash trees, with first detections in Aroostook and York counties in 2018 and later in Cumberland in 2019.
Arborist Christ Plante explained that pesticide injections (based on tree measurements) protect healthy trees and must be repeated every two years to prevent costly removals.
Amid expected Medicaid cuts, Brad and Alley Tuttle opened a direct primary care clinic in Bangor earlier this week to offer longer appointments and 24/7 phone access.
The clinic charges $90 a month for individuals and limits its panel to 500 patients following a 1950s model that allows doctors to spend more time with each patient.
Many Maine homesteaders who sought self-reliance in the 1960s and 70s have left rural life due to aging, health issues, and family needs — they now live in town with routines that still honor their old values.
Former farmers from Bucksport and Orrington say the change brings more social connection and easier living while keeping a link to their past.
Cooper Flagg will make his NBA debut with the Dallas Mavericks summer league team against the Los Angeles Lakers at 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the Thomas — Mack Center in Las Vegas.
