COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Safe Kids Maine and Versant Power are partnering for a free car seat safety checkup event on June 28 at Quirk Motor City on Hogan Road in Bangor — technicians will be on site from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and additional events are scheduled for September 27, December 13, and March 28.  WABI 5

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Officials confirmed that during a Katahdin hike on June 1, New York hiker Tim Keiderling died of hypothermia and his daughter, Esther, died from blunt force trauma after sliding into boulders in harsh weather, with their bodies found on June 3 and the following day.  News Center Maine

CRIME NEWS

  • On Thursday, officers shot an individual who ignored commands to drop a gun at a home in the outer Broadway area at 2:45 p.m.—the injured person with non-life threatening wounds was taken to a hospital while three officers, Brian Cronk, Taylor Reynolds and Ben Ferland, are on leave pending an investigation by the Office of the Attorney General.  WGAN

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Maine farmers have produced 83 million pounds of wild blueberries on more than 20,000 acres since 2012 and now face challenges from a changing climate and labor shortages. University of Maine researchers are sharing cost-effective techniques—like an AI-powered camera and efficient fertilizer practices—to help small growers sustain the industry.  News Center Maine

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Mills signed a bill that changes Maine’s Death with Dignity law (allowing doctors to waive up to ten days of waiting for terminally ill patients) and the law will take effect in mid September (reducing the wait to at least seven days) after concerns that some patients die during the current seventeen-day period.  WABI 5
  • A Bangor committee met Wednesday to review $3.4M in opioid settlement funds received since 2022—less than $20K of which had been spent as of April—and to recommend spending on projects including safe injection sites, detox centers, and housing programs. The nine-member group will meet twice a month to provide its transparent, fair, and equitable recommendations to City Council.  Bangor Daily News
  • Bangor has a new city manager in Carollynn Lear who replaces longtime manager Debbie Laurie and brings over a decade of state and federal work to her new role. She will focus on hiring key staff and addressing challenges such as homelessness and safer transportation—efforts that city leaders believe will improve services.  News Center Maine

  • Newport's Cooper Flagg achieved his dream when he was named the No. 1 overall pick by the Dallas Mavericks and met commissioner Adam Silver during the draft while celebrating with his family in New York.
