  • Good Shepherd Food Bank will sponsor three summer lunch sites where children in Bangor and Brewer get free nutritious meals. Meals are offered at the Brewer Housing Authority Pavilion on weekdays from June 23 to Aug 21, at the Rock Church in Bangor from June 23 to 26, and at Fairmount School in Bangor from June 30 to Aug 8 — all available to children under 18.  FOX Bangor

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UMaine co-developed an online hazing deaths database with HazingInfo.org – the University of Washington and journalist Hank Nuwer helped the project – which shows an average of five college hazing deaths per year since 2000 and lists 122 deaths recorded since then. The database, which goes back to 1838, is meant to honor the victims and guide efforts to prevent future hazing.  Bangor Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Federal data show that Maine’s foster care population grew 17% from 2019 to 2023, making it the fastest-growing in the nation and one of only six states with this trend—recent state figures now indicate the number has declined after reaching a 20-year high in removals from abuse and neglect while Gov. Mills signed new legislation redefining child neglect.  Bangor Daily News
  • Two Passamaquoddy heroes, Pfc Charles Lola and Pfc Samuel J. Dana, are honored today when the Army National Guard renamed the Woodville training area after them following their brave actions during a World War I battle at Xivray, France. The Guard said one hero was killed by machine gun fire while the other received a severe leg wound—details that marked their critical role in helping their unit regain ground.  FOX Bangor

  • June is National Homeownership Month and Penquis is offering local homebuyer education to help buyers understand mortgage options, credit checks, and other financial steps—its classes come in-person, live online, or self-paced.   • Tuesday will be a massive day for playoff baseball in the Bangor area as local high school teams vie for a state title game spot in four North regional matchups from Class A to Class D — games are set in Bangor, Orono and Augusta. The Rams face Mt. Ararat at 4:30 p.m. at Morton Field in Augusta, Hermon meets Ellsworth at 6:30 p.m. in Orono, Dexter plays Washington Academy at 7 p.m. at Mansfield Stadium in Bangor, and Bangor Christian takes on Machias at 3 p.m. in Orono — local teams aim to advance.  Bangor Daily News
  • Bangor High School will face Edward Little of Auburn today at 6:30 p.m. at Central Maine Community College in the Class A North championship as the team, now 14-4, seeks its first regional title since 2010.
