GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Hurricane season begins with Maine facing a 60% higher chance for storms in the Atlantic as federal budget cuts to FEMA and layoffs at the National Weather Service raise concerns about forecast accuracy and disaster response. LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • On Friday, PETA parked its 'Hell on Wheels' truck outside Hot Suppa restaurant in Portland, showing images of chickens being sent to a slaughterhouse and playing sounds of distressed chickens to urge people to go vegan. REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Maine’s biggest cities approved few homes for sale as developers focused on rental units—driven by limited land and high construction costs—which has made it hard for first-time buyers to find options. First-time buyer Lydia Horn, a Holden native now returning to the Bangor area, saved enough to secure a two-bedroom home in Old Town for $227,500.  Bangor Daily News
  • Steven Farren reapplied to the Historic Preservation Commission after he installed an asphalt roof on his 1880 home on Broadway to replace the costly slate roof. The commission will review his application on July 10 — his submission includes letters from his insurance company and a contractor that confirm the roof needed replacing.  Bangor Daily News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Hermon High School baseball coach Matt Kinney—a former major league pitcher with teams including the Red Sox and Brewers—uses his experience to guide his team’s pitching staff, helping players like senior Max Hopkins improve their mechanics.
