- ➤ Hundreds of law enforcement officers across the state will carry the Flame of Hope for the 2025 Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Maine starting Tuesday, June 3 through multiple legs. The run will finish with its final leg starting Thursday, June 5 in Dover-Foxcroft and concluding with the Flame entering the opening ceremonies on Friday, June 6 at the University of Maine in Orono — raising awareness and funds for over 5,000 athletes with intellectual disabilities. - ➤ The Bangor Humane Society worked with The Glass Feather to hold a Paws for a Cause fundraiser on Saturday where 100 unique stained glass paws were sold for $50 each to support animal care and medical needs—several animals were adopted at the event. WABI 5
- ➤ Bangor’s longtime city forester Rolland Perry, who planted 812,809 trees and established four public forests including the Rolland F. Perry City Forest, died May 15. - ➤ At the Bangor Public Library, Chen Chinese Academy celebrated the Chinese Dragon Festival on Saturday with crafts, special foods, and a dragon boat race game that engaged young participants. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Maine lawmakers' Energy, Utilities, and Technology Committee approved a bipartisan reform bill that will change net energy billing by creating a tier system to give smaller community solar projects more support—commercial solar advocates say the change may harm larger renewable energy companies. - ➤ On May 28, the Legislature’s Standing Committee on Inland Fisheries and Wildlife approved a bill that will prohibit floating camps on Maine’s waters. The bill includes an amendment—adding a grandfather clause for floating structures in place as of January 1 to protect businesses like DiMillo’s Marina—and carries criminal penalties while it awaits full legislative approval.
