COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The city will soon rename the trail linking Sylvan Road and Stillwater Avenue after Gerald Talbot, Maine’s first Black legislator. A ceremony is set for 11:30 a.m. at Eastern Maine Community College’s Rangeley Hall (rain plans will move the event indoors) with his family in attendance.  Bangor Daily News
  • Honor Flight Maine left Bangor International Airport for a weekend trip to Washington, D.C. where veterans will visit monuments and historical sites – the group returns to Bangor on Sunday.  WABI 5
  • The Autism Society of Maine hosts its second Walk for Autism event today at Husson University as part of its 50th anniversary celebration — registration begins at 10:30 a.m. and the walk starts at noon. The family-friendly event will feature local vendors, games, and snacks for all.  FOX Bangor

  • Rock icon Billy Idol will share the stage with Devo & perform at Maine Savings Amphitheater on Aug. 11, offering Bangor fans a live rock concert this summer.  WABI 5
  • Montell Jordan, fresh from beating cancer, previewed Friday night’s ‘I Love the 90’s Tour' at the Cross Insurance Center during an interview with WABI. The tour features 90’s stars such as Vanilla Ice and kicks off at 7 p.m. as Jordan films a documentary on his recovery & readies his R&B set.  WABI 5

  • An eastern phoebe pair moved their nest under an eave when their original clutch suffered egg loss at a local home yesterday. Their quick renesting shows how birds adjust to Maine's cool weather & low insect numbers.  Bangor Daily News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Penobscot Community Health Care unveiled the new Seaport Dental Center (with eight chairs) at the community health center in Belfast Friday. The clinic expands walk-in dental care in Waldo County to ease emergency department burdens and received over $1.3 million in federal funding for renovations.  News Center Maine
  • Piscataquis Regional Food Center has been awarded funding from the Maine Cancer Foundation to launch the Nourish Piscataquis initiative — the program will offer monthly meal kits, recipes, nutrition guidance and cooking classes to help rural residents in Dover Foxcroft overcome food insecurity.  The Piscataquis Observer
  • A 44th HIV case was reported in Penobscot County last week, with nearly all cases also testing positive for hepatitis C, according to the Maine CDC. Governor Mills defended enhanced testing and treatment efforts at a Bangor event as officials continue outreach to those affected.  Bangor Daily News

SPORTS NEWS

  • UNH sophomore Ruth White advanced to the NCAA nationals after finishing ninth in the 10,000-meter race at the NCAA East First Round at the University of Kentucky on Thursday night — seeded 27, she will compete in the national final on June 11 at the University of Oregon.  Bangor Daily News
  • A Bangor driver rode a lucky streak to win a local race on Friday (at the community circuit), boosting his reputation among racing fans. His win has stirred excitement in the local sports scene.  WABI 5
  • Ray Martin, a local driver, will debut in the Pro Stock Series on June 6th at Speedway Presented by Bar Harbor Bank and Trust in Hermon during its 60th anniversary. He won his first race car in a raffle in 2023 and now gears up with crew help + passion.  WABI 5
