ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 74-year-old hiker was rescued Wednesday at 11 a.m. from Borestone Mountain after falling 15 feet onto rocks and then another 10 feet (with two midcoast-area nurses helping) before LifeFlight of Maine airlifted him to a nearby trauma center (where he remains stable).  Bangor Daily News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Eaton Peabody, a Bangor-based law firm serving clients since 1939, announced it will close on June 30—ending 85 years of service in Bangor, Portland, and Augusta—and will transfer its lawyers and clients to other firms. Eight lawyers left in January to form Viridian Law in Ellsworth amid evolving market conditions.  Bangor Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Congressman Jared Golden introduced a bill called the Protect our Parks Act of 2025 that would reinstate park staff laid off in mass firings—he aims to secure adequate staffing so Acadia and other national parks stay safe and well maintained. The measure is intended to enhance visitor safety and resource protection as summer approaches.  FOX Bangor
  • The Maine Senate approved bills that require landlords to test private wells for PFAS every five years and to provide tenants with results within 10 days, while another bill will fund free testing for low-income households. The bills now await additional votes in both chambers before being sent to Gov. Mills—experts say the measures are vital since over half of Mainers depend on private wells for drinking water.  Bangor Daily News
  • City crews from Street’s Landscape & Lawn Care will restart work on Pickering Square on Monday to finish upgrading sidewalks, blue LED lighting, seating, and display boards in downtown while the project—costing $960,000—was delayed last summer and will finish by mid-July. The work is part of the city's plan to revitalize an important downtown corner that has been empty since last summer.  Bangor Daily News
  • Bangor Public Works is offering free compost and saplings to Bangor residents available today at 7 a.m. at 530 Maine Avenue — residents must show proof of Bangor residency as they can take unlimited compost while limited to one sapling each, with supplies available until 6 p.m. Friday and 5 p.m. Saturday.  WABI 5

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation will host its largest community fundraiser on Sunday, June 1st at Husson University, with registration starting at 11:00 a.m. and the 5K run/walk beginning at noon—this event will raise funds and awareness for Crohn’s disease and colitis.  WABI 5

SPORTS NEWS

  • Local runners Ruth White and Helen Shearer are representing Maine in the NCAA East Regionals, with White running in the 10,000-meter race on Thursday night and Shearer set to compete in the 3,000-meter steeplechase Saturday—both athletes give back to the high school programs that helped launch their careers.  Bangor Daily News
  • Hermon High’s Hawks lead Class B North with a 13-1 record and a 10-game winning streak as they pursue another title run. They will host John Bapst Saturday at noon and face Hampden Academy Tuesday at 7 p.m. (their only loss came on April 29), and Coach Steph Biberstein praised the team's strong hitting and pitching.  Bangor Daily News
