CULTURE NEWS

  • Bangor Beautiful organized a community mural painting event at the Farmers Market on Sunday, inviting volunteers to repaint a shipping container used by vendors. The non-profit plans to commission a larger mural on Two Hammond Street (the Chamber of Commerce Building) and welcomes additional support.  WABI 5
  • The Island Arts Association held its first craft fair of the season on the village green in Bar Harbor, showcasing 34 local artisans with works like stained glass, embroidery, sea glass art, and photography. All proceeds benefit the YWCA, which supports local initiatives.  WABI 5

  • Bernie Sanders drew 1,400 supporters at the University of Maine in Orono on Sunday to back local candidates Graham Platner and Troy Jackson ahead of the June 9 primaries — speakers warned voters to fight corporate power.  Bangor Daily News
  • Senator Bernie Sanders — a longtime advocate of economic equality — led his Fighting Oligarchy tour in Orono on Sunday, speaking to over 1,000 attendees at the Collins Center for the Arts while endorsing Senate candidate Graham Platner and Governor candidate Troy Jackson. He urged higher taxes on the wealthy and the tour moves to Portland Monday night — a local note ahead of the June 9 primary.  FOX Bangor

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Outdoor expert Susan Bard explains that black fly season in Maine lasts from mid-May to mid-June, so locals planning outdoor activities can protect themselves using repellent products like Sawyer's picaridin and permethrin sprays (while coastal areas may see fewer bites).  The Piscataquis Observer
