EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Bangor teacher Tracy Vassiliev from James F. Doughty School has been selected for the National STEM Scholar Program along with nine other middle school teachers to receive STEM training and network building. She will work with her class on a big idea challenge project if funds are available (funding pending). WABI 5
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The EPA terminated four-year, $1.6 million grants for PFAS research in Maine that were led by the Mi’kmaq Nation, UMaine and the Passamaquoddy Tribe—stating that the projects did not match its funding priorities. Local officials and researchers have criticized the decision and plan to appeal while seeking private funds to continue the work to protect public health. Bangor Daily News
- ➤ Browntail moth caterpillars sampled in Brewer are developing faster and are roughly 20 percent larger than those at other monitoring sites due to local weather conditions. Officials say the caterpillars will reach the moth stage soon—releasing toxic hairs that cause skin irritation—and advise residents to clip affected limbs to help reduce infestations. - ➤ The Secretary of State’s Office released final wording for a referendum question on a red flag law that will appear on the Nov. 4 ballot unless the legislature enacts it sooner. The question asks if courts should temporarily restrict gun access when law enforcement, family, or household members show a person poses a significant danger, following a period of public comment on the initiative titled 'An Act to Protect Maine Communities by Enacting the Extreme Risk Protection Order Act.' - ➤ Congressman Jared Golden announced his run for reelection in Maine’s 2nd Congressional District and said running again is the surest way to restore balance in Washington—he considered various options before choosing to run—while he faces a challenge from former Gov. Paul LePage. WABI 5
- ➤ Digital literacy programs in Maine are at risk after the Maine Connectivity Authority lost $35 million in federal funding, which cut support for free tech classes and help for rural residents (including those in Kenduskeag). The National Digital Equity Center lost $13.8 million and is seeking new funds while local libraries adjust class sizes to continue assisting those who need digital skills. News Center Maine
